Wheeler Ferris Wheel and OKC Sign

Come around and take a spin on this Oklahoma City attraction: the Wheeler Ferris Wheel and big OKC Sign.

The Wheeler District is an up-and-coming neighborhood in Oklahoma City, located between downtown and Capitol Hill. There are new developments, shops, public spaces, and restaurants being built to revitalize this area of the city. At the center of it all is the Wheeler Riverfront Plaza anchored by the Wheeler Ferris Wheel and the giant OKC sign.

With a gorgeous view of the downtown Oklahoma City skyline. The public space offers games, concessions, seating, hammocks, and more. But the main draw to the Wheeler District is the giant Ferris Wheel. The Oklahoma City Ferris Wheel actually started its life in an entirely different place: California.

For 12 years this 100-foot tall Ferris wheel spun at Santa Monica Pier on the California Coast, at the end of the trail for historic Route 66. Running from 1996 to 2008, it was eventually replaced. But Santa Monica’s loss was Oklahoma City’s gain. After purchasing the ride on eBay, it was moved eastward to its new home in another Route 66 city.

While you might come to take a spin on the Ferris wheel, you should definitely stay to take some Instagram-worthy photos at the popular OKC sign.

The big OKC sign in Oklahoma City was created by local fabrication artist Hugh Mead. It consists of three 10-foot tall aluminum letters spelling out O-K-C, the abbreviation for Oklahoma City. They are the perfect height and construction to allow visitors to climb onto the letters for fun Instagram selfies.
