Here she is: Miss America. And here she is again. And again. Oklahoma City University has been home to three winners of the famed pageant and they are commemorated on campus with bronze Miss America statues.
In 2004 the university unveiled a brand new Kerr-McGee Centennial Plaza, a beautiful campus spot that highlights some of the school’s most famous alumni. There you’ll find benches, trees, and a Hollywood Walk of Fame-esque displays of stars featuring the likes of opera star Leona Mitchell and Tony award-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth.

At the heart of the plaza is the Miss America statue, a bronze sculpture depicting the three Miss Americas who once graced the university halls: Jane Jayroe (1967), Susan Powell (1981), and Shawntel Smith (1996). Each bust stands tall wearing a gown and crown and holding a big bouquet of flowers.
While on campus be sure to also visit the University’s Fine Arts Center to experience the Hall of Queens. A shrine to all of the OCU students who have competed in the Miss America pageant, having one the title of Miss Oklahoma or another state.
If you ask me, this Oklahoma roadside attraction is a winner!
