Iggy’s Diner in Carthage, Missouri promises a family-friendly atmosphere, good food, and friendly service in a retro locale on Route 66.

Pull into the parking lot of this Route 66 diner and you’ll immediately notice its shining stainless steel facade, right out of Happy Days. But this retro diner wasn’t built in Route 66’s heyday, it was built, brand new, in the late 1990s.

Since 1999 Iggy’s Diner has been serving diner fare in these 1950s digs. The inside is just as old-fashioned as the outside, with record albums and odes to Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, and James Dean sprawling across the walls.
Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you can pull up to a formica table and order from their menu of classic fare. Specialties include Texas French Toast, Country Fried Steak, Chicken Fried Chicken, Catfish, Burgers, and Spaghetti Red (a spaghetti topped with chili, pickles, and onions).

I’d been thinking all day of ordering a fried steak sandwich with a side of crispy shoestring onion rings. But, by the time I got there, after spending all day baking in my car under the hot sun, all I could think about was salad. So I compromised by getting a honey-mustard-topped fried chicken salad that would give me the crisp vegetables I needed with a little bit of that fried goodness I craved.
It was good. But next time I’m definitely trying those onion rings.
