Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, is known as the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “the most famous recording studio in the world.” It is, after all, the place where some of the most well-known names in music history got their start.
Sam Phillips opened the soon-to-be famous recording studio in 1950. Originally called Memphis Recording Service, he later started Sun Records from which Sun Studio took its name.

In 1951 “Rocket 88” by Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats was recorded at Sun Studio, a song that is thought to be the world’s first rock ‘n’ roll single. But the music didn’t stop there: an ever-present cast of talent has come through the doors and recorded hit after hit. Artists who got their start at Sun Studio include Howlin’ Wolf, Roy Orbison, Junior Parker, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and B.B. King
But it was in 1954 when a bonafide legend-to-be walked through the studio doors and recorded his first tracks. That legend was Elvis Presley.
Sun Studio offers guided tours through the history of the music. See memorabilia that invokes the history of Memphis music, hear stories about famous recording sessions, and even walk in the footsteps of The King by posing with the very microphone Elvis recorded with.
