To mark 100 years of the Mother Road in 2026, Route 66 Centennial Monuments are being installed in communities all along the historic highway. These 16-foot-tall structures celebrate the spirit and legacy of Route 66 with double-sided, LED-lit shields that proudly display the state’s abbreviation and the “1926–2026 Centennial” mark.
Each monument includes a display box noting its exact location (whether it’s a town, neighborhood, or roadside attraction) and a QR code that leads to a webpage full of stories, history, and things to do nearby. They’re perfect photo ops and meaningful markers of the road’s long and winding story.

Lucille’s Route 66 Centennial Monument in Hydro, Oklahoma, stands beside Lucille’s Historic Highway Gas Station, also known as Provine Station, which was once operated by Lucille Hamons, the beloved “Mother of the Mother Road.” For more than 60 years, Lucille offered travelers fuel, snacks, famously cold drinks, and a warm dose of hospitality. The classic Bungalow Craftsman-style station, complete with restored vintage pumps, evokes the golden age of road travel. Thanks to preservation efforts by Route 66 enthusiast Rick Koch, the station stands today as a lasting tribute. The new monument shines as a celebration of Lucille’s enduring legacy of kindness, community, and love for the open road.
