Galena, Kansas, named after the lead ore “galena” found in the area, has a rich history rooted in mining. Founded in the late 19th century during a lead and zinc mining boom, the town quickly grew as miners flocked to exploit its abundant resources. This mining heritage is reflected in Galena’s historic buildings and landmarks. When Route 66 was established in 1926, it passed right through Galena, further cementing the town’s place in American history. Today, the Galena Mining and Historical Museum celebrates the town’s mining roots and Route 66 legacy, offering visitors a glimpse into its storied past.
Galena Mining & Historical Museum is housed in the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas (“KATY” Railroad Company) train depot, which was built in 1904. It fell out of use in the 1970s, was acquired by a community group in 1983 and opened as a museum in 1984. Step inside to explore the rich history of the local area.
