There are plenty of fun photo ops on Route 66: neon lights, oversized roadside attractions, vintage service stations, murals, and shield signs galore. They all make good excuses to hop out of the car and grab some Instagram-worthy photos of your road trip. But how often do you get to stay in your car for that picture-perfect photo op? This Route 66 attraction was made for both you and your car to enjoy: the Route 66 Neon Drive-Thru Sign in Grants, New Mexico.

The Route 66 Neon Drive-Thru Sign is an 18-foot tall open portal big enough for a car to drive through. And that’s exactly what it was made for! The attraction has become a popular photo op for road trippers to drive into, park their car, and hop out for some souvenir pics.

The shape of the sign mimics that of the classic Route 66 shield and it is outlined in ropes of purple and red LEDs that glow at night. The main side reads “Grant, New Mexico” followed by “Historic Route 66” and is embellished with painted flames that celebrate Grants’s status as New Mexico’s “Land of Fire and Ice.”
The other side says “Grants, New Mexico” in a classic postcard style bubble font. The letters are filled with cartoon drawings of local scenery and the word “Welcome” is repeated down the sides in a variety of languages.

The Route 66 attraction was unveiled in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 6, 2016, in honor of the 90th anniversary of The Mother Road. It was built by the NMSU-Grants welding department.
You can find this New Mexico roadside attraction next to the Hub of History Park in the heart of downtown Grants. A paved path loops you around from the side street, through the shield, and back out.
