Paul’s Daughter is one of the oldest restaurants on the Coney Island boardwalk. It’s known for cold beer, clam strips, lobster rolls…and the fiberglass mama and papa A&W Burger Family statues on their roof.
About Paul’s Daughter
The popular spot in Brooklyn has been serving up food and drinks to park visitors since 1962, when it opened as Gregory & Paul’s after owners Paul Georgoulakos and Gregory Bitetzakis . The name later changed to Paul’s Daughter, a tribute to Tina Georgoulakos, who now operates the family business.

While the restaurant’s facade has changed over the years, with new signage sparked by an almost-eviction in 2011 due to a redevelopment project, the A&W Root Beer Family mom and pop have been mainstays at this mom and pop for years.
What is an A&W Burger Family?
The Burger Family is a family of mascots for the A&W Restaurants. They were first introduced in 1963 as cartoon representations of the chain’s three size choices of hamburger: Papa Burger, Mama Burger, and Baby Burger (a Teen Burger and Teen Burger were added later, as were others like Grandpa Burger in Canada). These mascots were used across the menu, signage, advertising, and as the model for giant fiberglass statues made by International Fiberglass. Their use was discontinued in 1974 when A&W introduced the Great Root Bear as their new mascot.
The A&W Burger Family statues on Coney Island at Paul’s Daughter are two of the family: mama burger and papa burger. The popular New York roadside attractions once stood flanking the Astroland rocket, but that was removed in 2009. The family has since been moved closer together to stand next to each other on the building. Papa holds up a giant hamburger and an American flag while Mama holds a giant mug of frosty beer (a mug that originally held root beer and once was painted with the Brooklyn Brewery logo). Papa once held a sign that said “Looking for a new beach,” when the restaurant was facing eviction from the Coney Island Boardwalk, but, luckily, he was able to stay, along with mama and the restaurant.
