How big is the World’s Longest Map of Route 66 at El Trovatore Motel in Kingman, Arizona? The 206-foot long mural stretches across one side of the motel, saving space for each of the eight states that make up Route 66: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
The current mural features a dark gray painted background with a light gray and yellow road running along the entire length of it. Each panel the features the name of each state in a bold font with an icon that represents it.
- Missouri shows flowers, possibly the state flower, the white hawthorn blossom
- Kansas shows a cow
- Oklahoma shows a bird, possibly the state bird, the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher
- Texas shows a cowboy on a horse
- New Mexico shows cacti and a hot air balloon
- Arizona shows a land formation that is probably The Grand Canyon
- California shows a beach with a palm tree and the End of Route 66 sign that is found at Santa Monica Pier.
At one end of the mural is a postcard-stamp like image that proclaims it to be the World’s Longest Map of Route 66.
But the map didn’t always look this way. Painted by local artist Dan Louden in 2011, the original featured a yellow background and more cartoonish journey, with icons of characters and roadside attractions. You can get a glimpse of this on the Illinois panel whose bright iconography sharply contracts the more minimal and modern design of the rest of the mural, which was repainted in 2023 as part of the TV show Motel Rescue.
But is the World’s Longest Map of Route 66 in Kingman, Arizona really the World’s Longest Map of Route 66? Maybe. Or maybe not. Other giant maps of The Mother Road exist. Or, have existed in the past.
You can find one World’s Longest Map of Route 66 at Butterfield Stage Co. Steakhouse in Holbrook, Arizona. Previously there was also another, done by Bob Waldmire, at the now abandonedTrading Post in Meteor City.
