Road trip Play List! Sometimes I like to share my favorite songs to drive to. You know those songs, the ones that make you crank up the volume, crank down the windows, and sing at the top of your lungs on the highways and rural byways. Today’s road trip play list song is The Next Best Western by Richard Shindell.
About a year or so ago a friend invited me to join him at a small concert space on the outskirts of Chicago to see Richard Shindell perform live. I agreed to go, not really knowing any of his work, because I always like hearing new music and because I do enjoy folk (I probably would classify my favorite genre as “a boy and his guitar”).
The Next Best Western was one of the songs on the playlist that night, and, when he began to play it, my ears perked up. While I’m not a particularly religious girl, I know the feelings he sings about all too well.
It’s a little slower than a lot of songs about driving, but reflects the calmness of the road, the wistful meloncholy of driving on a dark highway in the middle of the night in search of something, anything…
